$315million QB to quit NFL and start Hall of Fame clock as CBS Sports seeks Matt Ryan replacement

Russell Wilson’s Hall of Fame countdown might be about the start.

The quarterback has earned around $315 million in a distinguished career that brought him one Super Bowl ring with the Seattle Seahawks.

He came agonizingly close to adding a second, before his trajectory dived after a historically bad trade to the Denver Broncos.

It did not get much better for Wilson as a New York Giant and, after being replaced by Jaxson Dart, his next contract is likely to be on camera.

The Athletic reports that he is in ‘deep discussions’ to go into TV, with CBS Sports’ The NFL Today the frontrunner.

Wilson has already appeared on CBS, including during the Giants bye in 2025.

There is a gap on the network’s pre-game show after Matt Ryan left to become president of football at the Altanta Falcons.

The current line-up includes host James Brown and analysts Nate Burleson and Bill Cowher.

Players must be retired for five consecutive seasons to become Hall of Fame eligible, meaning Wilson could potentially be up for consideration in 2031.

If his form in Seattle had continued, he would have been a lock.

But the self-styled Mr Unlimited was anything but after leaving the Seahawks.

After he was benched last season, Tony Gonzalez and Richard Sherman debated his case for Canton on Amazon Prime.

Legendary tight end Tony Gonzalez claimed he had ‘played himself out’ of a shot.

“I think you got to judge his career off when the Legion of Boom was there,” added Sherman of his former Seahawks teammate. “You had a legendary defense, an all-time defense, and how much success he had and then without that legendary defense, the success he had.

“Without that legendary defense, he’s been 4-11, 7-8. 0-3 to start with the Giants.

“He was a winning football player in Seattle and people said, ‘Hey, winningest football player.’ All this good stuff, all these accolades.

“And now you get to go on your own and you get to prove, ‘Hey, I’m this great quarterback. I’m this guy that’s gonna be dominant.’ And it just hasn’t worked out that way.”

Per The Athletic, Hall of Fame linebacker Luke Kuechly is also a target.
