$2.2bn NFL stadium gets grand opening as high-tech locker room that will change color revealed

It came too late for a World Cup game, and whether a Super Bowl would come to Western New York remains to be seen.

But the multi-billion-dollar Buffalo Bills’ new stadium is now officially open for business.

The Bills cut the ribbon on the New Highmark Stadium – just 50 feet away from their former home – on Tuesday, marking a new era of NFL football in the city.

Buffalo had teased features of their new state-of-the-art arena in the weeks leading up to the ribbon-cutting ceremony, including that of the locker room.

There, they revealed some never-before-seen highly technologically advanced features, which includes that of fully customizable bi-directional ceiling and floor lighting, as well as light bars linking the lockers together.

This means that the colors of the locker can be changed to reflect the color of the uniforms that the team will be using on any given game day to give each week a different feel.

There are also active ventilation systems in each player’s locker to help dry them out with ease, as well as wireless charging and plug sockets built into their seats.

Bills took inspiration from English Premier League stadium

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Bills owner Terry Pegula revealed that he extensively scouted soccer stadiums all over Europe to get inspiration for the New Highmark Stadium.

He eventually settled on creating an amphitheatre that resembled that of English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, whose stadium was constructed in 2019 and plays host to the NFL twice a season.

“We went over and looked at Tottenham [Hotspur] in England, and I asked Scott Radecic [former Bills linebacker turned founding partner of architecture firm Populous], ‘Can you build me one of these?’

“And, it’s fairly similar, but I think we got the job done.”

The stadium costed a total of $2.2 billion to construct, with financial resources coming in from various avenues.

While the Pegula family contributed $1.35 billion, they also accepted a $600 million donation from New York State and a $250 million contribution from Erie County.

The Bills Mafia also helped fund their beloved team’s new home.

“Bills Mafia contributed $263 million through PSL [Personal Seat License] purchases and helped us finance what you’re looking at today,” Pegula revealed.

Some other really unique features of the stadium included a way to combat all the elements – especially those brutal winters.

Furthermore, there is a specially devised area to honor all of the people that worked on the stadium’s construction, something Pegula stated was a non-negotiable.

“At the topping-off ceremony, I made a promise to our workers, our laborers, that somehow someway we would have their name visible on this stadium, where their offspring and friends could come and look and see their name on the side of the stadium,” Pegula said.

“So behind me is a wall with, right now, 5,369 names of you hard-working Americans who got the stadium built.

“It’s one thing to talk about. It’s one thing to get the money. It’s another thing to get it done. You’re different kinds of heroes.”

Bills fans will be able to enter the New Highmark Stadium for the very first time on September 17, when Josh Allen and co. take on the Detroit Lions in a heavyweight primetime Thursday Night Football battle in Week 2 of the 2026 NFL season.
