19-year-old heavyweight sensation eclipses Moses Itauma feat with blistering 62-second KO

Leo Atang passed his latest assignment with flying colours.

The precocious 19-year-old made quick work of Dan Garber in a step-up fight on the Leigh Wood vs Josh Warrington undercard on Saturday night in Nottingham.

Atang came flying out of the gates like a man possessed and quickly backed up Garber against the ropes.

As he did, the York teenager unloaded a blistering flurry of shots that caught Garber on unsteady legs, resulting in referee Kevin Parker stepping in and waving off the fight after just 62 seconds.

The stoppage came one minute and 20 seconds quicker than Moses Itauma‘s one round demoltion of Garber in March 2023.

But when informed of the statistic, Atang was quick to shut it down.

“I will put this to bed now,” he said. “There is no need to make comparisons.

“He [Itauma] is a lot higher than me, I’ve got a long way to go.

“But who knows what will happen down the line?”

Atang improves to 5-0 as a professional, with all of his victories having come inside the distance.

And while he was pleased to continue his winning ways, the youngster felt the referee’s intervention came a touch too soon.

“We got it done, but I give credit to my opponent,” added Atang.

“I felt we could have gone a little longer, but it is what it is.

“It is out of my hands, and maybe the referee was just protecting him.”

On the stoppage, his promoter, Eddie Hearn, added: “The referee is ultimately stopping Garber from getting badly hurt.

“Me, I would have liked another 10 seconds to get the job done nice and clean.

“But the thing is, he is a big, strong lad, unloading shots with speed and power, and the referee has to make a decision.

“The referee saved Garber from getting flattened.”

Hearn went on to confirm that Atang had booked his place on the Callum Smith vs David Morrell undercard on April 18 in Liverpool.
