How Yankees’ Anthony Volpe truly feels about potential second base move

With Jose Caballero set to return soon, Anthony Volpe may need to spend some time at second base. It seems like shortstop is Caballero’s position at the moment, but Volpe could still handle shortstop duties at times. However, he is going to play second base as well. On Friday, Volpe shared his thoughts on the second base move.

“I’m ready to go, whatever the team needs,” Volpe said on Friday, via Yankees Videos.

Volpe is willing to help the Yankees however he can. Many shortstops do not love the idea of moving away from the position, but a team-first mindset is of the utmost importance.

For Volpe, the situation is especially notable since he was once considered to be the shortstop of the future. In fact, some even thought he could become the next Derek Jeter for the ball club. Now, he is preparing to potentially move to second base at 25 years old.

Through eight games played at the MLB level so far in 2026, Volpe is hitting .217/.400/.304. He has recorded two doubles as well. There is still a chance that Volpe could establish himself as the shortstop of the future again, but he will need to take a step forward without question.

Caballero, meanwhile, has hit .268/.327/.406 across 42 games played this season. He has made a significant impact. Caballero has clearly won the trust of Yankees manager Aaron Boone and the team.

The Yankees are currently playing the Tampa Bay Rays as Gerrit Cole is making his return from injury in the contest.
