13.5-sack Chargers’ star shoves contract extension concerns aside
The NFL is roughly a month away from the start of training camp. The 2026-27 season is going to be one of the biggest ever after a massive trade that involved Myles Garrett going to the Los Angeles Rams. The other team in Los Angeles, the Chargers, contains a rising star edge rusher who is hoping to become a household name, just like Garrett.
All 32 teams are going to have conversations with certain players about contract extensions. Kris Rhim, who covers the Los Angeles Chargers for ESPN, shared an update on the situation with edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu. Tuipulotu is coming off a career season with the Bolts and is turning into one of the best edge rushers in the league.
“Fresh off a career-best 13.5 sacks, which ranked sixth in the NFL, Tuipulotu is due for a payday. He heads into the final season of his rookie contract as the biggest remaining domino for general manager Joe Hortiz. The Chargers and Tuipulotu’s representation have discussed an extension throughout the offseason, but a deal hasn’t yet been agreed to. ‘Man, I don’t know,’ Tupulotu said of a timeline for the extension. ‘I’m going to be here. I’m going to be with the team.'”
The good news for the Bolts is that Tuli will be with the team and not hold out if a contract extension does not get done before training camp. Joe Hortiz has stated that it is a top priotity to keep Tuipulotu around for “a long time.” The extension will come at some point. He’s a local player who was drafted out of USC. There is no doubt that Los Angeles is the place for him to be.
The Chargers brought back Khalil Mack and drafted Akheem Mesidor to give the defensive front a star trio at rushing the quarterback. However, Tuli and Mesidor are the future.
