Zohran Mamdani reveals why Knicks’ Jalen Brunson is the perfect New York hoops hero

The New York Knicks will walk into confetti and championship euphoria one more time on Thursday. Jalen Brunson and company re-galvanized the basketball mecca with their NBA Finals run. Even city mayor Zohran Mamdani is feeling the championship energy from this Knicks title.

He even believes the finals most valuable player is the “perfect” hoops hero for New York. Which Mamdani shared Wednesday.

“He’s always described in a language of ‘but’ or a language of caveat. He speaks to the story of New Yorkers and the city as a whole who’ve been counted out and overlooked,” Mamdani said via a television interview. “Instead, they show every single day that they’re worth it.”

The mayor also hailed it as a “full circle moment” that Brunson celebrates this title with assistant coach Rick Brunson, who played on the 1999 Knicks team that fell 4-1 to the San Antonio Spurs.

Brunson’s journey indeed contained crossing through multiple loopholes. Brunson dropped to 33rd overall in his NBA Draft class while battling the size narrative. Some fans even believed the 6-foot-1 Brunson wasn’t capable of carrying an NBA team on his back.

But he scored 30 points or more in four of the five games against San Antonio, including hitting 45 to close out the series. That 45-point Game 5 outburst placed Brunson in a Michael Jordan category.

Brunson’s New York celebrity has since skyrocketed. The New York Yankees called on him and Josh Hart to throw out the first pitch of their Wednesday game versus the Chicago White Sox. But Thursday rises as one of the most important days in New York City history. Long-suffering Knicks fans can watch the first championship parade since 1973.
