Yankees’ Jose Caballero issues blunt claim on IL stint
The New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-2 on Tuesday, ending a four-game losing streak. But that was far from the most talked-about move the Bombers made on Tuesday. The Yankees placed Jose Caballero on the IL with a finger injury, calling up Anthony Volpe from Triple-A Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Caballero made a promise about his IL stint to Newsday’s Erik Boland after the game.
“10 days, that’s the max I’m taking,” Caballero said.
The Yankees sent Volpe back to the minors after his rehab assignment, confirming Caballero as the starting shortstop. His performance both offensively and defensively was strong enough for the Bombers to make that call in the middle of a winning streak. Now, less than two weeks later, Volpe is back with the big club.
Caballero can breathe easy, however, as Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he is the starting shortstop even through this injury. But the ex-Tampa Bay Ray knows that minds can be changed by great performances. He just knocked Volpe out of the majors, so he knows that Volpe can send him to the bench.
The Yankees know how dangerous it can be to have a shortstop, or any player, playing hurt. Volpe hurt his shoulder during the 2025 season, toughing out the year and then undergoing offseason surgery. It was the worst season of his young career by far, and caused a lot of strife between Volpe and the fans. They traded for Caballero at the trade deadline, knowing that Volpe was not going to cut it for much longer.
