Yankees’ Aaron Boone drops electric take on Cam Schlittler’s dominant outing vs. Reds

NEW YORK– The emergence of starting pitcher Cam Schlittler has been nothing short of a godsend for the New York Yankees. Since his arrival last summer, the Massachusetts native has looked every bit the part of a cornerstone arm.

As Schlittler struck out a career-high 13 batters and delivered six scoreless innings during Friday night’s 5-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, it was evident that the 25-year-old was in the middle of another start that could place him squarely in contention for this season’s American League Cy Young or in a position to potentially start the upcoming All-Star game.

After the win, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was sure to praise the righty’s special performance.

“Electric real early…,” Boone said. “He was feeling it tonight.”

The Yankees have struck gold with right-hander Cam Schlittler

New York got on the scoreboard early against Cincinnati starter Rhett Lowder. In the bottom of the second, Jazz Chisholm Jr. launched a solo home run into the right-field upper-deck, and Ben Rice mashed his 21st homer of the season, a three-run blast, later that inning.

From there, it was all about Schlittler. The former seventh-round pick surrendered just four hits and did not allow a single walk. According to Baseball Savant, he generated 18 whiffs and 17 called strikes on the night.

By doing so, Schlittler lowered his ERA to an American League best 1.71 and became only the second Yankee to strike out 13 batters in six innings or fewer.

“I’ve been working on things for a little bit now, so it was good to finally kind of see that click,” Schlittler said.

When prompted by reporters, Chisholm mentioned that the flamethrower has a case to make some noise at the MidSummer Classic.

“I think that would be pretty cool to see him out there pitching in the All-Star Game, knowing that he’s one of the best pitchers in the world,” the second baseman said.

By the time shortstop Anthony Volpe ripped an RBI single to add insurance in the eighth, it was evident that the Reds’ lineup did not have an answer for the Yankees’ pitching staff. After Schlittler departed, Jake Bird, Brent Headrick, and David Bednar combined for three clean frames to seal the win.

A long season offers plenty of opportunities to learn about a team’s ceiling and overall identity. While it is far too early to know exactly what the 2026 New York Yankees are made of, Schlittler has clearly defined who he is as a competitor.

“The goal is to win a championship, so those small statistics don’t really matter,” Schlittler said.
