Wyndham Clark closes BMW Championship with 3 birdies in a row to fend off Rory McIlroy

It was not exactly pretty, but Wyndham Clark will gladly take it.

Clark ruled the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club on Sunday despite squandering a sizable lead. He sank three birdies in the final three holes for an even-par 70 and a three-shot win over Rory McIlroy, who breathed down his neck in the final round.

It was Clark’s third victory this year, firmly putting him in the running for PGA Tour Player of the Year.

In a report from the Associated Press, the 32-year-old golfer reiterated his underdog mentality.

“I think it shows that I’m one of the best players in the world. I know everyone maybe gives me a hard time and roots for other people. But I feel like I’ve kind of come into my own,” said Clark.

“Three wins in one season is my best year yet—coming off my worst year ever. I’m just really pleased where I’m at right now.”

To recall, he was showered with boos in the final round of the US Open in June. There was still a lingering backlash from his locker-room meltdown in 2025 and other past transgressions. Clark, however, did not fold amid the jeers, capturing the crown for the second time.

He lost his five-shot lead to McIlroy, admitting that he was making “dumb bogeys.” But he recalibrated and stayed composed. Most of all, he trusted himself and his competitive fire.

“As much as I would have loved to run away with this, it was fun getting the juices going and really feeling the angst coming down at the end,” added Clark.

He took home $3.6 million for the victory.
