How to read top goalscorer odds

There are three main ways of displaying odds: decimal (e.g. 9.00), fractional (e.g. 8/1) and American (+800). 

Decimal odds show the total payout including the stake. Just multiply your stake (e.g. £10) by the odds (e.g. 9.00) and you get your £90 payout, £80 of which is profit.

Fractional odds show the profit (the first number) relative to the stake (the second number). Multiply your stake (e.g. £10) by the odds (e.g. 8) and you get £80 profit.

For American odds, divide the odds (e.g. +800) by 100 and multiply by your stake, giving £80 profit.

Each-Way betting on the top goalscorer

An each-way bet is actually two separate bets: one for the player to win outright, and one for them to “place” (usually finishing in the top three or four).

The place portion usually pays out at one-quarter of the listed odds, although it is worth checking the precise fraction with your bookmaker.

There is more than one way to finish as the World Cup’s top scorer. A winner of the award could score the bulk of his goals against weaker opposition in the group phase, or he could see off his rivals by finding the net two or three times from the semi-finals onwards.

A forward who takes penalties and free-kicks is particularly valuable, as set-piece situations provide another route to goal.

If two or more players finish level at the top of the scoring charts, FIFA’s Golden Boot award goes to the player with the highest number of assists, with minutes played used as a second tiebreaker.
