World Cup: Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay predictions and betting tips – Nunez to sink the defenders he knows best

Uruguay get their World Cup underway against Saudi Arabia at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Monday night, 11pm UK time, and with Spain the overwhelming favourites in Group H, this is the game Marcelo Bielsa’s side simply have to win to take control of the race for second.

The bookies make Uruguay strong favourites at 1/2, and it’s not hard to see why. Saudi Arabia’s build-up has been chaotic, with Georgios Donis only appointed as manager shortly before the tournament, and recent results have included a 4-0 thumping by Egypt and defeats to Ecuador and Serbia.

But Uruguay’s own warm-up form has been short on goals, so I’m expecting a controlled win rather than a rout, and my three bets reflect exactly that.

Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay predicted lineups

Both managers are expected to field strong sides for what already looks like a crucial game in the battle to qualify from Group D.

  • Saudi Arabia expected lineup: Al-Owais, Al-Harbi, Al-Amri, Altambakti, Abdulhamid, Kanno, Juwayr, Mandash, Aljohani, Al-Buraikan, Al-Dawsari
  • Uruguay expected lineup: Muslera, Varela, Caceres, Olivera, Vina, Valverde, Ugarte, Bentancur, Araujo, Vinas, Nunez

Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay predictions

Saudi Arabia arrive with the core of the squad that famously beat Argentina at the last World Cup, and captain Salem Al-Dawsari, the match-winner that day, remains their talisman.

But the late managerial change has disrupted their preparation, and away from a 3-0 win over Puerto Rico their recent form makes grim reading, with defeats to Ecuador, Serbia and that 4-0 loss to Egypt. They’ll sit deep, frustrate, and look to nick something on the break in the Miami heat.

Uruguay are a different animal. They finished fourth in South American qualifying with Federico Valverde pulling the strings, and while their friendlies have been low on goals, the defensive side has looked rock solid, with a 0-0 against Algeria and a 1-1 with England in their last two outings.

With a midfield of Valverde, Manuel Ugarte and Rodrigo Bentancur behind Darwin Nunez, there’s more than enough quality to get the job done.

Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay betting tips

Here are my three bets for the game.

Uruguay to keep it clean in Miami

Uruguay have kept clean sheets in three of their last four victories and they’ve conceded just once across their last two friendlies.

At the other end of this game, Saudi Arabia’s only goals in their last five games came against Puerto Rico and in defeats, and their disrupted preparation under a brand new manager hardly screams attacking cohesion.

When these sides met at the 2018 World Cup it finished 1-0 to Uruguay in a game of barely any chances, and everything points to a repeat of that pattern. At 11/10 this is better value than the straight win at 1/2.

A slow burner at Hard Rock Stadium

Uruguay have scored just three goals across their last five friendlies, the Miami heat will slow the tempo right down, and Saudi Arabia will put everyone behind the ball from the first whistle.

The prediction markets have this at 69% Uruguay, 21% draw, 13% Saudi Arabia, and the bookies are pricing a managed, low-scoring afternoon rather than a goal fest.

Bielsa’s side want three points here, not a statement. A 1-0 or 2-0 grind is the overwhelmingly likely shape of this game.

Nunez to punish the defenders he knows best

Darwin Nunez spent this season in the Saudi Pro League with Al Hilal, so he knows these defenders better than any other forward at the World Cup.

There’s a catch, as a foreign-player registration reshuffle means he hasn’t featured for his club since February, and he was a substitute in the England friendly, so check the team news before kick-off.

But Bielsa has kept full faith in him as Uruguay’s main striker, he has 13 goals in 36 caps, and with Suarez and Cavani gone this is his stage now. At 11/8 against the weakest defence Uruguay will face in this group, the price more than covers the risk.

Important historical facts about Saudi Arabia and Uruguay for betting

  • These sides have met three times, with one win each and a draw. The last meeting was at the 2018 World Cup, where Luis Suarez scored the only goal on his 100th cap.
  • Saudi Arabia stunned eventual champions Argentina 2-1 at the 2022 World Cup, with current captain Salem Al-Dawsari scoring the winner.
  • Saudi Arabia have won just two games across their last five World Cup appearances.
  • Uruguay won the first ever World Cup in 1930 and lifted it again in 1950, and they remain the smallest country by population to win the tournament.
  • Uruguay went out at the group stage in 2022, edged out by South Korea on goal difference.
  • Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera has come out of international retirement for a fifth World Cup and is set to become Uruguay’s record World Cup appearance maker.

Saudi Arabia have upset pedigree, but this Uruguay side under Bielsa are too organised to fall into that trap. Expect a professional night’s work.
