WNBA deletes post of Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese breaking league rules

“The entire league is run by morons,” were the words of Outkick founder Clay Travis about the WNBA.

These comments were made in response to the WNBA posting a video to their official X page in which they showed superstars Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese appearing to bet $400 during All-Star Weekend.

The video depicted the Dallas Wings star and Atlanta Dream standout making a friendly wager ahead of Wednesday night’s game between the two teams.

“At All-Star Weekend, you and Angel made a bet on this game, is that right?” the person behind the camera asked Bueckers.

“We did?” she responded.

The issue is that betting completely violates the league’s gambling policy, which also adds an explanation as to why the post was later deleted from the web.

In Section 5(c) of the WNBA’s new Collective Bargaining Agreement, it states that, “Any player found by the Commissioner after a hearing to have been guilty of wagering (directly or indirectly), or of offering or attempting to wager, money or anything of value on the outcome, score, or any other aspect of any WNBA Competition shall, in the sole discretion of the Commissioner, be subject to a fine, suspension, and/or dismissal and disqualification from any further association with the WNBA.”

While it is very unlikely that under-fire WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert will suspend either one of them for the video, it brings about the wider question of how the league’s official social media team put two of their biggest stars in a position to potentially face repercussions in the first place.

The league will therefore likely have to address this both internally and externally.

But Travis wasn’t done just calling the league morons, as he unleashed in a scathing rant about the WNBA and spoke of how NFL players have been treated for engaging in very similar things in the past.

“I can’t even comprehend how dumb you have to be to post this video from the league’s official account. Like sub 70 IQ. And how stupid are the players too?! On video bets with cash being shown?,” he wrote on X.

“Players in the NFL have missed entire seasons for this. Legit the dumbest move, potentially, in social media history by a sports league to post this.”

Things got fiery in Arlington

As for the friendly bet itself, Reese wound up winning as the Dream emerged narrowly victorious with an 82-81 win over the Wings at College Park Center in Arlington, Texas.

Despite their close relationship off the court, the two got into a heated altercation in the early stages of the contest on Wednesday night.

As Reese tried to post up her opponent in the first quarter, the Wings’ two-time All-Star stood strong on defense, forcing the Dream star to pass the ball.

But Bueckers was deemed to have fouled Reese on the play, and after being called for the foul, could be seen clapping her hands in frustration.

Reese then appeared to have some choice words for Bueckers as she was walking away.

The ‘Bayou Barbie’ – a nickname earned from her time in Baton Rouge at LSU – finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, along with four assists, four steals and one block.

Bueckers, on the other hand, was held to just 16 points – her fewest since her 15 point outing in the win over the New York Liberty at the beginning of July – and six assists, to go with four rebounds, one steal and a block, as the Wings fall to 18-10 on the season.

After the game, Reese appeared to confirm the bet the two had made.

“Yeah, I’ll be requesting my Apple Pay after this,” she joked, before praising her opponent, and friend.

“Paige is a great player. You know, when you hold her to 16 points, it’s tough. She’s just so good, and her mid-range is, obviously, so good.”
