Wizards rumors: The $120 million contract extension Trae Young is expected to sign

Things may be looking up for the Washington Wizards as they own the No. 1 pick in next month’s NBA Draft. Many believe the Wizards will select AJ Dybantsa, a can’t-miss prospect at the wing position.

A starting lineup of Dybantsa, Trae Young, Kyshawn George, Anthony Davis, and Alex Sarr is not too shabby if they can stay healthy.

Young, in particular, has expressed optimism about what they are building in Washington. Last season, he was limited to only five games with the Wizards due to various ailments, averaging 15.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 6.2 assists.

The 27-year-old guard, who is entering the final year of his contract, is expected to sign an extension with the Wizards, as stressed by NBA insider Marc Stein.

“Early projections on the likely ballpark for Young’s new deal with the Wiz: $120 million over three seasons. Young has until June 23—Night 1 of the draft—to activate or bypass the player option. He’s eligible for a three-year extension worth nearly $160 million until June 30,” wrote Stein on his Substack.

Washington acquired Young in a midseason trade with the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert.

Young and Davis could form a lethal duo for the Wizards. They must be extra motivated to prove to everyone that they still belong in the league’s upper tier.

Young, a four-time All-Star, remains among the most talented floor generals, leading the NBA in assists in 2024-2025. He is expected to start over Bub Carrington and D’Angelo Russell.

While $120 million for three years may be lower than what he was used to on the Hawks, it is still enticing, given that he is coming off an injury-riddled campaign.
