Why Nick Wright is ‘pessimistic’ about Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers in 2026

The Pittsburgh Steelers are running it back with Aaron Rodgers, who will serve as the team’s quarterback once again for the 2026 NFL campaign.

Rodgers has said that the 2026 season will be his last in the league, but not everyone seems to be buying it, with some still  believing that the future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback will have a cameo of sorts (a la 2025 Philip Rivers) beyond  2026.

Nick Wright of First Things First, however, thinks that this is really it for Rodgers. He’s not even sure if Rodgers will be fine late in the season, considering the quarterback’s age.

“He’s gonna be 43 during this season, Wright said during Monday’s edition of First Things First. “I am very pessimistic about how he’s going to look at the end of this season.”

The 10-time Pro Bowler Rodgers will be 43 in December. It is rare for a player beyond 40 to still be playing in the NFL, but that’s the adventure the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player is taking, as he prepares for his second season with the Steelers.

Pittsburgh waited for a long time for Rodgers to make up his mind in the offseason, so the Steelers are hoping that their patience with him will be reciprocated by solid quarterback play, even though he is already way past his prime. The team went 10-7 with Rodgers in 2025 and made the NFL playoffs.

Factoring in his age, Rodgers still performed well under center in 2025. That season, he passed for 3,322 yards and 24 touchdowns against seven interceptions while completing 65.7 percent of his attempts.
