Why Man City are renaming Etihad Stadium for crucial title match against Brentford

Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium will be renamed for Saturday’s crucial Premier League clash against Brentford.

As part of plans to highlight the club’s official charity, this weekend’s match will take place at ‘The City in the Community Etihad Stadium’.

Fans will notice extensive branding throughout the stadium to reflect the name change as well as a host of other features.

City’s players will walk out onto the pitch sporting the charity’s branding prior to kick off.

Elsewhere, defender Ruben Dias has produced a voiceover for the announcements for buses and trams in the city that cover direct matchday routes.

Player graphics on social media have also been created by local schoolchildren.

Support days for City in the Community (CITC) have been longstanding at the club with one matchday selected per year to highlight the charity’s work.

Mike Geary, CEO of CITC, said: “Community Matchday is a moment in the season where everyone connected to Manchester City comes together to celebrate the impact of City in the Community.

“From supporters in the stands to staff, partners and participants, it’s a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a football club and its community unite behind a shared purpose.

“We are incredibly grateful to the men’s squad for their continued generosity and commitment to our charity.

“To receive this donation for the second year running means a great deal to everyone at City in the Community, and more importantly, to the young people it will support.”

No further slip-ups

Pep Guardiola’s men will hope to toast the occasion with a much-needed victory against a Brentford side chasing European qualification.

City can ill-afford any further slip-ups in the title race following Monday’s 3-3 draw at Everton, which handed Arsenal a five-point advantage in the title race.

Should City win their game in hand, they would still be two points adrift of the Gunners meaning Saturday’s clash with the Bees is a must win if they are to keep their title ambitions alive.

Guardiola’s side have the opportunity to put pressure on Arsenal by playing before their title rivals.

The Gunners, who booked their spot in the Champions League final in midweek, travel to relegation-threatened West Ham on Sunday, aiming to keep daylight between themselves and City.
