Why Garrett Crochet roster move won’t impact potential injury return date for Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have been sputtering for the majority of the 2026 season, and their latest move with star pitcher Garrett Crochet indicates that their one-step-forward, two-steps-back approach is not going to change any time soon. Crochet has been moved to the 60-day Injured List.

It was originally thought that Crochet would be out slightly more than 15 days when he went on Injured List in late April. However, he had a setback last week after a throwing session with lat tightness, and that led to the move by the Red Sox to extend his stay on the Injured List. He will not be eligible to return to action until June 25, at the earliest.

The move comes at the same time as the Red Sox have sent starting pitcher Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester. Bello had been an established part of the pitching rotation, but he has had a nightmarish season. He has been especially ineffective in the first inning of games he has started. His latest start saw him allow 6 runs — all of them earned — in Thursday’s home loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

The Red Sox have promoted left-handed pitcher Joe La Sorsa to the active roster. La Sorsa was recently acquired in a deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates and he will be available as the Red Sox open a three-game series this weekend against the New York Yankees.

The Red Sox are in last place in the American League East with a 26-35 record. While they have played reasonably well on the road with a 16-14 record, they have been brutal at Fenway Park with a 10-21 mark.
