Why Eagles’ Howie Roseman said screw conventional wisdom with A.J. Brown trade

The Philadelphia Eagles are trying to move on after the big trade, and other players need to step up. Also, here’s why Howie Roseman said to forget conventional wisdom by dealing AJ Brown to the Patriots, according to The Athletic.

“Roseman said his requirement for making the deal was a first-round pick,” Zach Berman wrote. “But he was less insistent on what year that pick would come. And the Eagles see value in the uncertainty of a future pick.”

And Roseman said “when” didn’t matter.

“We’ve always been in the mindset a pick is a pick — a first-round pick is a first-round pick,” Roseman said. “Doesn’t matter. Teams are still going to be playing football in 2028.”

Is Eagles GM Howie Roseman thinking right about this?

It’s not difficult to support the idea of getting a first-round pick. However, the Eagles won’t have AJ BRown during the 2026 season. And they won’t have him or an extra first-round pick in 2027. In a sense, the Eagles have given up two years of potential prime production from Brown. And his theoretical replacement won’t be on the field until the fall of 2028. And that player might not even be a receiver.

“There’s a school of thought that a pick should be devalued one round for every year a team must wait,” Berman wrote. “That’s not a philosophy to which the Eagles ever subscribed. Even preceding Roseman’s time as GM, when former Eagles president Joe Banner helped oversee the roster. The Eagles have long targeted future picks in deals and have tried to capitalize on the notion that they’re worth less.”

Of course, the Eagles could come out with gold if the Patriots fall out of the playoff picture in 2027. Injuries, roster mismanagement, a married coach having a publicly discovered affair (just saying), could possibly cause a team to tumble from the top ranks. The Eagles might even wind up with a top 10 pick in 2028. It’s almost impossible for it to be lower than it was this year, because the Patriots picked at No. 31 after reaching the Super Bowl.
