Why Dillon Brooks has his eyes set on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in Suns-Thunder Game 2

The Phoenix Suns fell 119-84 in Game 1 to the Oklahoma City Thunder to kick off the first-round matchup in the NBA Playoffs. With a chance to even up the series on Wednesday in Game 3, Dillon Brooks reveals why he’s locking in on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

While talking with media members on Tuesday during the Suns’ practice, the 30-year-old wing revealed he wants to take on Gilgeous-Alexander one-on-one during the Game 2 contest, according to Clamente Almanza of OKC Thunder Wire. Brooks seemingly wants to see what Gilgeous-Alexander brings to the table defensively as well.

Whatever Brooks’ plan is, he and the Suns have to find a way to slow down the Thunder’s 27-year-old phenom. That is much easier said than done, especially considering Shai Gilgeous-Alexander just won the Clutch Player of the Year Award. In Game 1, Phoenix allowed Gilgeous-Alexander to record 25 points, four rebounds, seven assists, and two blocks, while shooting 27.7% from the floor and hitting 15 of his 18 free throw attempts.

The Suns likely need more than just Dillon Brooks, Devin Booker, and Jalen Green being the only scoring options if they hope to pull off the first-round upset. Those three combined for 58 of Phoenix’s 84 points in that contest. So, more offensive production and doing their best to slow down the Thunder will be key for the next matchup.

Game 2 is scheduled to tip off on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. EST. It will be the second straight contest in Oklahoma City before the series moves to Phoenix for Games 3 and 4.
