When Giannis Antetokounmpo felt his time with Bucks was over
Giannis Antetokounmpo felt like he was going to be next in a long line of one-franchise lifers in the vein of Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, and Stephen Curry. But in the end, Antetokounmpo’s desire to compete for championships far outweighed his loyalty to the Milwaukee Bucks franchise. On Monday, the Bucks ended the Antetokounmpo era, trading away the greatest player in franchise history to the Miami Heat for a package headlined by Tyler Herro.
An Antetokounmpo trade has been in the works for quite some time now, and Monday night simply made official what has long been inevitable. In fact, as per ESPN’s Shams Charania, Antetokounmpo has felt as though his time with the Bucks, the team that drafted him 13 years ago, was already over “a calendar year ago”.
“It was a 13 month trade saga for Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. To put it plainly, Giannis felt like his time was up with the Bucks a calendar year ago,” Charania said in an appearance on SportsCenter.

Antetokounmpo had been putting pressure on the Bucks organization to give him the tools necessary to compete for another title after fizzling out in the playoffs in 2022 (in the second round) and in 2023 (their embarrassing first-round flameout against the Heat). That was when they traded for Damian Lillard.
The Bucks, however, lost their identity upon Lillard’s arrival, and they proceeded to exit the playoffs in the first round in both of Lillard’s seasons with the team. To make matters worse, Lillard ruptured his Achilles tendon, requiring even more drastic measures from Milwaukee to keep up with Giannis’ demands.
Alas, Milwaukee only severed its hand with their decision to waive and stretch Lillard’s contract to sign Myles Turner. Moreover, the Bucks’ decision to trade franchise icon Khris Middleton in a desperation deal for Kyle Kuzma must not have sat well with Giannis, considering how Kuzma has struggled in the Cream City.
It wasn’t for a lack of trying that the Bucks lost Antetokounmpo. If anything, they tried too hard and failed all the more spectacularly, leading to the inevitability of Giannis’ departure.
