What Serena Williams said about playing singles again before doubles return
The WTA crowned a brand new Grand Slam champion over the weekend when 19-year old Mirra Andreeva completed a dominant title run at Roland Garros. Now, after welcoming a new member to the major champion club, an old member is coming back.
Serena Williams is returning to the WTA Tour this week to play doubles at Queen’s Club alongside Victoria Mboko. Queens, a 500-level event, is the first of the grass court season in the leadup to Wimbledon. The 23-time major champion’s return was a poorly-kept secret after she re-entered the anti-doping testing pool a while back.
Williams isn’t signed in to play singles in London this week, but fans are wondering whether she will eventually take her comeback back to the singles court.
Before the tournament, Williams left the door open to a potential return to singles, via ESPN.
“I can’t say no right now,” Williams said. “I feel like I probably need to train a little bit more if I want to play singles, and we will see if I get there, and if not … that’s not my journey right now.”
Williams would almost surely receive a singles wild card to Wimbledon if she so chooses to ask for one. She is a seven-time champion there and would be a nightmare for anyone to face in the first round. She has not played a singles match since her retirement at the 2022 U.S. Open.
For now, though, the focus is on the doubles court for arguably the greatest women’s player in the history of the game. Her partner, Mboko, is a 19-year old Canadian who is quickly becoming a superstar in singles. She is already ranked No. 9 in the world and won a WTA 1000 title last season at home in Montreal.
There are all kinds of theories as to why Williams would want to come back to the tour. Does she miss tennis? Is she planning to play doubles with her sister Venus at the U.S. Open? Only time will tell, but the return of a legend is sure to draw plenty of eyes.
