What Ole Miss’ Pete Golding said about watching Lane Kiffin’s LSU squad maul Clemson

Not many gave Clemson a chance against LSU on Saturday. So LSU made sure to comply, demolishing Clemson by 41 points, 51-10, at Baton Rouge.

LSU coach Lane Kiffin pressed the right buttons in his much-anticipated debut with his new squad, showing that the Tigers can live up to their powerhouse tag.

Sam Leavitt threw for 230 yards, one score, and one interception, while logging 12 carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Dillin Jones had similar numbers with a game-high 23 carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

In a report from Yahoo! Sports’ Dan Wolken, Ole Miss coach Pete Golding admitted that he kept an eye on LSU.

“I watched probably two quarters. I thought they played really well on defense. They’ve got some really good players up front. I think they are what everybody thought they were going to be on paper,” said Golding.

The ninth-ranked Rebels and the 11th-ranked Tigers have a long-standing rivalry. Plus, of course, there was much hullabaloo about Kiffin leaving Ole Miss to sign a seven-year, $91 million contract with LSU.

Ole Miss won its season opener as well, beating Louisville, 41-38, at Nissan Stadium on Sunday. Trinidad Chambliss led a gutsy drive in the fourth quarter, which set up the walk-off field goal from Lucas Carneiro from 48 yards.

Golding rejected the assumption that their play was affected by all the noise about LSU.

“I could be naive, I guess, but I don’t think it had anything to do with the game. We were not overlooking Louisville at all. It wasn’t like there were days (during fall camp) that we were using (to prepare) for other people,” added Golding.

Ole Miss will face Charlotte on Saturday before facing LSU on September 19.
