The New York Yankees’ bid to turn around their current three-game losing streak faced a stiff challenge against the Baltimore Orioles. In a series-opening clash between division rivals, the Yankees got off to a strong start. New York starter Ryan Weathers took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning. Unfortunately, Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman broke up Weathers’ bid in the seventh inning. Baseball reporter Lucas Parmenter shared Rutschman’s single via X, formerly Twitter.

“Adley Rutschman single breaks up the Ryan Weathers no-hitter,” posted Parmenter shortly after Rutschman’s knock.

Rutschman’s single led to the Yankees unraveling. The righty got Orioles first baseman Pete Alonso to ground out, but then walked outfielder Tyler O’Neill. That led to the end of Weathers’ night, as reliever Brent Headrick entered with two on and one out. Three pitches later, Baltimore third baseman Coby Mayo slugged a three-run homer, giving the home team a 3-2 lead they’d never relinquish.

Despite the no-hit bid, Weathers once again ended up with a frustrating result. The 26-year-old has gotten off to a strong start in his first season sporting pinstripes. Currently 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA and 54 strikeouts over 45 innings, the former Miami Marlin has certainly earned the right to keep his rotation spot, even after veteran co-aces Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon return.

For the moment, though, the Yankees’ offense needs to wake back up. After a sweep on the road at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers, Monday’s 3-2 defeat in Baltimore has led to New York’s fifth loss in its last six. When their pitchers give performances as Weathers did, the offense needs to pick up the slack. Can the Bronx Bombers get back to their winning ways? If not, staying at the top of the AL East will be considerably tougher.
