The NCAA college baseball postseason is in full swing. On Sunday, West Virginia took on Kentucky in the seventh game of the Morgantown Regional. Ultimately, the Mountaineers came away victorious 6-5, moving on to the Super Regional.

The victory came courtesy of junior utility player Armani Guzman, who won the game with a walk-off RBI single. Afterward, West Virginia and their fans in the stands all got together to sing some John Denver, per Jon Morosi of MLB Network. They were singing in unison to Denver’s 1971 classic song “Take Me Home, Country Roads”. The song describes the beautiful scenery of West Virginia.

All in all, it was a moment that really captured the spirit of the program, per ESPN. All generations were belting out a tune that a significant portion of them weren’t around to see John Denver perform.

Overall, Denver was one of the most illustrious foand for and of singing of the 1970s. Altogether, he was known for his wholesome image and for singing songs about romance, the love of nature, and enjoying the simple things in life. Among his other classic songs are “Rocky Mountain High,” “Annie’s Song, “Sunshine on My Shoulders”, and “Thank God I’m a Country Boy”.

He sold over 33 million albums in the United States and 100 million worldwide. In 1997, Denver was tragically killed in an airplane crash at the age of 53.

Today, Denver continues to inspire a new generation of artists. And who would have thought that he would inspire West Virginia baseball?

The Mountainers will now take on Cal Poly in the best-of-three Super Regional beginning Friday.
