Watch Reds’ Elly De La Cruz score on wild Marlins error
The Cincinnati Reds and Miami Marlins are in the midst of a three-game series to start the week in the National League. Both teams are off to solid starts, looking to make the postseason with low-budget rosters. The Marlins were cruising with Sandy Alcantara on the mound, but their bullpen could not hold onto the lead. Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz tied the game in the ninth on this wild pitch.

With Spencer Steer at the plate and two outs in the ninth, Marlins reliever Anthony Bender spiked a pitch. Even though it did not get past catcher Agustin Ramirez, De La Cruz sped home before the tag could be applied. Steer ended up striking out to end the inning, so De La Cruz’s speed gave Cincinnati a chance.
The Reds’ offense was anemic in the first eight innings of the game. Alcantara threw just 95 pitches in 8.1 innings, allowing three hits and two walks. It was the walk to De La Cruz that ended his night, giving way to Bender. The Marlins ace was close to pulling off his second consecutive Maddux – a sub-100 pitch shutout – but could not pull it off.
The Reds won the first game of the series 2-0 after sweeping the Texas Rangers. But the offense has been a problem for Cincinnati, scoring more than four runs just twice all season. That was on display on Tuesday, until De La Cruz made his sensational sprint for home.
De La Cruz has been solid at the plate so far this year, slugging three home runs already. But his dominance on the base paths has been less obvious since Terry Francona took over as manager. He showed off his speed in a big spot on Tuesday night, and it may just pay off in extra innings against the Marlins.
