Warriors’ Stephen Curry fondly reflects on Kevin Durant’s ‘little White kid’ joke from childhood

The Golden State Warriors are currently gearing up for the nine vs ten NBA play-in game on Wednesday evening on the road against the Los Angeles Clippers. It’s been a brutal season for the Warriors in 2025-26, but they do have a glimmer of hope in the form of Stephen Curry, who is back in the lineup after a multi-month absence due to a knee injury.

Ahead of the postseason, Curry did a bit of reflecting on his past, including about when he first encountered his former Warriors teammate, Kevin Durant.

“…I played against KD in AAU when I was 9. I was in Charlotte and he was in the DMV (Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia metropolitan region). There’s always that joke, he thought I was a little White kid because he didn’t know who I was, just a little shooter. That’s his favorite joke,” said Curry, per Nick Friedell of The Athletic. “And that was, what, ’97, ’98? So think about how long that is. I don’t know how to wax poetic any more than that.”

Curry and Durant have indeed both been in the game for quite a while, and they formed arguably the greatest duo in league history when they teamed up on the Warriors from 2016-2019. Durant is now a member of the Houston Rockets, whom he is hoping to lead on a deep playoff run this year, while Curry is trying to get the Warriors back in the playoffs after they lost in the second round to the Minnesota Timberwolves a season ago in a series in which he got injured in Game 1.

In any case, tipoff for the play-in game between the Warriors and Clippers is set to get underway at 10:00 pm ET from Los Angeles.
