Warriors rumors: Insider floats Andre Iguodala as ‘outside the envelope’ Steve Kerr replacement
The Golden State Warriors may be entering a new era next season, as there are reports suggesting that Steve Kerr will not return as the head coach. That means the Warriors will have to conduct a search for their next leader, and there could be several candidates that they have in mind.
Outside of some of the obvious names, such as Mike Brown, Jordi Fernandez and Todd Golden, there is one person that Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard named that may surprise some.
“Other names, some more realistic than others: Current defensive coordinator Jerry Stackhouse, current offensive coordinator Terry Stotts, Boston assistant Sam Cassel, TV analyst Brent Barry, and my outside-the-envelope candidate … Andre Iguodala,” Kawakami wrote.
Iguodala is definitely an interesting person to consider for the Warriors’ job, but it makes sense when thinking about what he’s meant to the franchise over the past decade. He’s played in the system, won championships with the franchise and knows a little bit about Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. It wouldn’t be a surprise if he were someone that Curry and Green would want as a head coach.
At the same time, experience matters as well, and with Curry, Green and Jimmy Butler on the backend of their careers, this is a search that needs to be taken seriously. They’ll want to find a coach that they know can help get them over the top and compete for however many years they have left in the league.
Unfortunately, names like Brown and Fernandez already have coaching jobs, and unless something goes wrong with them, they won’t be leaving their respective teams. Fernandez and his staff were just extended by the Brooklyn Nets, and Brown is in his first season with the New York Knicks.
As for Golden, he’s coaching Florida, and he recently noted that he plans on coaching them for the foreseeable future.
