Warriors lose 2 coaches amid Steve Kerr’s return

The Golden State Warriors did not have the deepest roster last season, especially after Jimmy Butler suffered a torn ACL and Stephen Curry battled a knee injury, but they did boast one of the most loaded coaching staffs in the NBA. It could be much thinner heading into the 2026-27 campaign, however. Although Steve Kerr is staying in the Bay Area after signing a contract extension, Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse will not be returning, per ESPN’s Anthony Slater.

The two assistants brought past head coaching experience to their respective two-year stints with the squad, so it will not be easy to replace their collective credibility. Stotts, who is most known for his nine-season tenure with the Portland Trail Blazers, operated as the de facto offensive coordinator while ex-Vanderbilt HC Stackhouse focused on the defense. The former told Kerr before regular season’s end that he would be departing.

Both men should command a fair amount of interest this summer and find themselves on another bench before the new campaign begins. Kerr and Warriors principal owner Joe Lacob previously discussed staff changes, per Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints. It will be interesting to see if Golden State pursues more former HCs, or if it goes after hardcore assistants to fill the vacancies instead.

There are obviously other items on the agenda that take priority, like surrounding Curry with sufficient firepower, but rounding out a capable staff could be crucial for team chemistry and morale. Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse will try to promote those intangibles wherever they land next.
