Victor Wembanyama, Spurs teammates send message with outfits before Game 1 vs. Blazers

The San Antonio Spurs never earn a reputation for being flashy even with rising star Victor Wembanyama. Past teams developed a business-like persona in winning multiple NBA titles. The upcoming series against the Portland Trail Blazers comes off as all business for SA too.

But they made quite the fashion statement with their pregame attire.

Wembanyama showed up first wearing all black including the suit. But same with Stephon Castle, De’Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper, etc.

Long story short, every member of the Spurs literally wore the same colors and outfits.

Some fans started joking that the Spurs were heading to a funeral. One that involves the Trail Blazers. Except the outfits came with another likely meaning: San Antonio hosting a postseason series for the first time in six years.

Fans of the Spurs haven’t seen an NBA Playoffs run since the 2018-19 season. Gregg Popovich led SA to a 48-34 overall mark that season before losing in the first round. San Antonio never won more than 34 games since that last playoff run.

Mitch Johnson now tastes the postseason in his first full year running the head coaching show. Johnson previously won 32 games after taking over for Popovich last season. Now he’s garnering NBA Coach of the Year recognition for leading the Spurs to a 62-20 mark, their best season since 2016-17.

It’s still rare a team has every player wearing the same outfit ahead of a playoff series, though. Even past championship teams had players rolling up in jerseys, slacks or different colored suits. Still, the Spurs’ all-black attire became the tone setter for this first round series.
