Veteran finally signs with Steelers over 2 months since initial report
The Pittsburgh Steelers have long been tied with veteran defensive back Darnell Savage Jr. Savage finally made it official that he will be playing for the Steelers in 2026, per KPRC TV, as he signed a contract.
Savage was originally reported to be signing with Pittsburgh way back in March, but it hadn’t happened. All speculation is finally ended as he officially has inked the deal.
“Darnell is excited about playing for the Steelers,” agent Seth Katz told the outlet.
Savage spent time during the 2025 NFL season with the Washington Commanders, Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars. He was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, by the Green Bay Packers.
The defensive back posted 18 total tackles in 2025, including 10 solo stops. Savage also had a forced fumble. There was speculation about why it took so long for him to sign this contract.
“The delay wasn’t simply a paperwork issue. According to NFL insider Mike DeFabo on “SNR Drive” in April, an unresolved medical issue held up the finalization of Savage’s contract. The Steelers waited to officially sign the veteran safety until he had fully healed and could pass his required physical,” USA Today reported.
The defensive back joins a Steelers team hoping to compete for a Super Bowl in 2026. Pittsburgh has a new head coach in Mike McCarthy, and veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers is back for one more season.
There are high expectations for this team. McCarthy replaces Mike Tomlin, who never had a losing season as head coach. Steelers fans are thirsting for success after a long series of playoff defeats.
The Steelers won the AFC North in 2025. Pittsburgh lost in the NFL Playoffs to the Houston Texans.
