‘Unplayable’ – EFL clash scrapped an hour before kick-off – six months on from previous postponement

Stevenage’s League One clash with Barnsley has been postponed at the 11th hour due to a waterlogged pitch.

The playing surface at the Lamex Stadium was deemed unplayable just over an hour before kick-off on Tuesday night.

Alex Revell’s side had been due to welcome their opponents for a 7.45pm kick-off.

However, the home side confirmed the match had been called off shortly after 6.30pm following a pitch inspection.

In a statement shared to X, Stevenage said: “Match postponed.

“Tonight’s scheduled Sky Bet League One fixture vs Barnsley has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

“Following a pitch inspection by referee Kirsty Dowle, the surface has been deemed unplayable.

“Refunds will be made available once the date for the rearranged fixture has been confirmed.”

The Tykes also announced the news alongside a message from manager Conor Hourihane for the travelling supporters.

Hourihane said: “I feel sorry for the fans who have travelled down in midweek to back the lads.

“We really appreciate it and we’ll see you all back at Oakwell.”

It is the second time the fixture has been postponed this season.

The two sides had originally been expected to meet in September, only for international call-ups to cause the match to be rescheduled.

Stevenage will now return to action at home to Huddersfield in just four days time on Saturday.

As for Barnsley, they welcome AFC Wimbledon to Oakwell on the same day.

Hourihane’s side currently sit 15th in the League One table, five points clear of the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Stevenage have fallen seven points adrift of the play-offs following back-to-back defeats.

Despite the postponement of Barnsley’s trip to Stevenage, there are still two more matches going ahead on Tuesday.
