UNC statement silences Bill Belichick as chief lieutenant placed on leave

A top aide to Bill Belichick has been placed on paid administrative leave by the University of North Carolina.

The program announced that general manager Michael Lombardi’s leave is effective immediately, in a statement released by vice chancellor for communications Dean Stoyer.

“As is standard procedure with personnel matters, leadership, staff, and student-athletes are prohibited from addressing this topic further, and has no reflection on the merits,” the statement read.

Reporting by ESPN’s senior college football writer Pete Thamel added after the initial that ‘per a source, this stems from an human resources complaint filed by a former UNC front office employee.

“There’s a pending investigation, which led to the administrative leave.”

Lombardi joined the Tar Heels in December 2025, just after Belichick was hired as head coach for the team.

The pair had previously worked together in multiple organizations in the NFL, including the legendary coaches last stint with the New England Patriots in 2016.

Upon signing the contract, he became the highest paid college football general manager, commanding a $1.5 million annual salary.

Lombardi has over 30+ years experience within the NFL, having worked in the front offices of the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders.

Lombardi’s short tenure as general manager wasn’t without controversy however, boasting that the Tar Heels considered themselves as the NFL’s 33rd team.

Additionally, with Belichick’s support, he informed the Patriots that their scouts would be banned from accessing the Tar Heels facility.

However an underwhelming first season followed, winning just four of their 12 games in the 2026 season.

Lombardi’s sudden suspension has brought doubts over Belichick’s future, with their season starting just over a month away -and starting in Dublin, Ireland against TCU.

Belichick arrived at the collegiate program with quite the resume, but his tenure thus far has been marked by both on-field and off-field drama.

The 74-year-old arrived with eight Super Bowl rings, six with the Patriots and two with the New York Giants as offensive co-ordinator.

Commanding a lucrative five-year, $50 million contract, many were expecting the Tar Heels to benefit from such pedigree, but it never materialized.

The Tar Heels poor record, which included a 2-6 showing in ACC play, also saw no roster member selected in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Five of the defeats came by double digits, including a 42-19 loss to rivals NC State in the series finale,

Controversy largely grew around his relationship with his girlfriend, Jordan Hudson, who eventually had to be banned from the UNC training facility.

Additionally, there was the suspension of an assistant coach tied to NCAA rule violations.
