UConn basketball’s Silas Demary Jr. returning to Huskies after March Madness run

UConn basketball has been the most successful college basketball program over the last four years, reaching three national title games and winning two national championships during that time. The Huskies couldn’t complete the title run this season, falling to Michigan in the title game.

Now, Dan Hurley and company have a lot of work to do to build the roster back up to make another run at a title next season. A lot of that will come through the transfer portal, but the best teams have gotten very good at retaining their own players as well. UConn got a big win on Tuesday when starting point guard Silas Demary Jr. announced on social media that he is coming back to Storrs next season.

Demary transferred to UConn last offseason after spending two seasons playing at Georgia. While his numbers during his junior year took bit of a dip on a talented UConn team compared to his final season in Athens, he was still a productive player for Hurley and company. Demary averaged 10.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and a Big-East leading 5.9 assists per game while making 38 starts.

Getting Demary back in the fold gives Hurley a locked-in starter at point guard, which will allow him to seek out players at other positions in the transfer portal. The rest of the roster is in flux, especially as UConn awaits the decision from sharpshooting freshman Braylon Mullins, but the idea of playing with Demary is a solid recruiting pitch.

Regardless of whether Mullins comes back or not, there will be plenty of scoring chances opening up after both Alex Karaban and Tarris Reed Jr. graduated. Karaban and Reed were the top two scorers on the roster, and Demary will be a prime candidate to take some of the shots that the two of them left behind next season.

Demary will enter his senior season as one of the best guards in the country and will make a number of preseason award watchlists. If he lives up to that billing, UConn will once again be a very tough out when March rolls around.
