Tristan Thompson claims crypto company never paid $2 million deal
Tristan Thompson is not backing down from an alleged breach of contract from a former partnership.
The NBA champion claims that when he was the brand ambassador for the cryptocurrency company World Mobile, they did not pay him the $2 million in crypto he was promised, yet the company continued to use his name, image, and likeness for promotion. He has since filed a lawsuit against the World Mobile Group.
Thompson claims he was supposed to be paid in tokens over two years for the $2 million, but the U.K. based company improperly terminated a lucrative endorsement agreement, per Bloomberg Law. While Thompson agreed to be a celebrity endorser of the company, he was more than just using his platform to shed light on the organization. Last year, he also joined the company as Chief Digital Equity Officer. The mission was to ensure that underserved communities worldwide have internet access.
The former Cleveland Cavaliers star argues that he fulfilled his end of the deal by promoting the brand in public events as well as having his followers stay informed of the brand’s efforts via social media. In the complaint, he alleges World Mobile avoided paying him by creating pretenses to terminate their previous agreement.
“To avoid paying the sums owed to Mr. Thompson, defendants purported to terminate the agreement for cause,” the complaint states. “But defendants had no grounds to terminate for cause under the agreement.”
To solve the claims, Thompson wants not only the unpaid compensation he claims he’s owed but also demands World Mobile be accountable for damages, interest, and a court order to prevent them for using his name, image, and likeness any further.
“Monetary damages alone are inadequate to remedy the continuing harm to Mr. Thompson’s reputation, goodwill, and control over the commercial use of his identity.”
Thompson nor World Mobile Group has made a public statement at this time.
