Tottenham Hotspur have slipped further towards an unprecedented Premier League relegation after West Ham smashed Wolves 4-0.

Doubles from Konstantinos Mavropanos and Valentin Castellanos gave the Hammers a deserved victory at the London Stadium.

The victory, their eighth in the league this season, has sent West Ham into 17th and two points above the bottom three.

It has also knocked London rivals Spurs into 18th ahead of their trip to Sunderland on Sunday afternoon.

Their worrying slide towards Championship football for next season has come less than a year after their Europa League triumph.

Spurs also sit in the Premier League relegation zone for the first time this season.

Sitting in the bottom three is certainly unfamiliar territory for the north London side given they were in the drop zone for a matter of hours in August 2015 and for a little while longer in January 2009.

With seven games left to play this season, Spurs look set for a nervy run-in as they look to avoid an embarrassing fall from grace.

Tense times at Spurs

The 2025/26 season has become one to forget for Spurs.

Four months into the calendar year, they have not won a single one of their last 13 league matches.

Eight of these have ended in defeat, and the most recent of their two home victories came on December 6.

Roberto De Zerbi will become their third manager of the campaign when he takes to the touchline this weekend.

Thomas Frank was initially in the hotseat before being sacked and replaced by Igor Tudor, who left after seven games in charge.

Former Brighton and Marseille boss De Zerbi has joined Spurs with the sole aim of securing their Premier League status.

First up are Sunderland, with clashes against Brighton and Wolves to come throughout the rest of April.

Aston Villa, Leeds United, Chelsea and Everton then follow in what will be a testing end to the campaign.

May 24 is the Premier League final day, by which point Spurs may already know which league they will compete in next season.

But for now, it’s West Ham who are in control of the relegation race thanks to their resounding victory on Friday night.

Hope for the Hammers

Like Spurs, West Ham had a change of manager earlier in the season as Nuno Espirito Santo was brought in to replace Graham Potter.

He has picked up some huge results in 2026, including a win over Spurs and draw against title-chasers Manchester City.

West Ham now face a six-match run that includes three London derbies, starting with an away clash at Crystal Palace on April 20.

Everton and Brentford are next, before a massive match at home to table-toppers Arsenal.

Newcastle United host them on the penultimate weekend, and it’s Leeds United who travel to east London on the final day.

West Ham have spent 14 consecutive seasons in the top flight, and their mission is to make it 15 in the coming weeks.
