Tony Romo replaced as CBS Sports announces new lead analyst after arrest

Tony Romo has been placed on leave from CBS Sports following his arrest for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

The Daily Mail reported that the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback will keep his job following his arrest in Milwaukee.

However, just days later, CBS announced that Romo has been placed on leave.

The network also revealed that JJ Watt will replace Romo’s as lead NFL analyst, alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson, during his absence.

The analyst, who is paid $18 million per year, was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence (OWI).

He was pictured smiling in a mug shot after being pulled over around 6pm local time in Wisconsin last Thursday.

Romo was pulled over hours after competing in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship, and taken into custody after performing standardized field sobriety tests.

Body camera footage of the stop later surfaced on TMZ, including Romo’s own reaction to the test results.

The ex-passer was released later that night, and has been ordered to appear in court on September 21.

Romo has sat alongside Nantz on NFL on CBS since retiring in 2017

During his playing career, he made four Pro Bowl appearances, and is the Cowboys franchise leader in touchdown passes with 248.

He was also the franchise leader in passing yards until Dak Prescott overtook him in 2025.

The network were facing calls to relieve him of his duties before the incident.

Fans have became increasingly vocal about his perceived shortcomings during broadcasts.

With Watt stepping in for the foreseeable future, Greg Olsen, the No. 2 NFL analyst at Fox following Tom Brady’s arrival, has been touted for the switch to CBS.

Olsen vowed that he will return to the No. 1 team after seeing his spot taken despite a promising start in the booth.

His contract with Fox reportedly expires at the end of the 2026 season.

“In my mind, I’m going to call big-time games again,” Olsen told the Charlotte Observer’s Scott Fowler in 2025. “I’m going to call Super Bowl games again. I just don’t know the timeline or the venue.
