Tony Romo faces three more citations in OWI arrest
Tony Romo has been issued three more citations following his arrest in Wisconsin last month.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was arrested on July 23 on the Milwaukee interstate just after 6 p.m. Since his arrest, bodycam footage shows Romo explaining to officers that he was just coming from the golf course on the way to see his grandparents. He told law enforcement that he had “zero” drinks when asked. He later performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was taken into custody, where he refused to take the breath test. The officer described Romo as having “red glassy eyes and the odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage.”
On Thursday, Aug. 27, he was issued three new citations, according to Wisconsin court records, per ESPN, for unsafe passing on the right, first-offense OWI, and possessing open intoxicants.
A rep for the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback star told multiple outlets that
he takes “full responsibility for his actions.”
“Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved,” Romo’s spokesperson said in a statement to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and TMZ. “We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close and we are communicating with CBS about next steps.”
After the arrest, Romo was put on leave at CBS where he is the lead NFL game analyst for CBS Sports. According to the Daily Mail, at the time of his arrest a source told the website that “he isn’t going anywhere long term. That wouldn’t make any sense for us at all.” Earlier this month, CBS Sports president David Berson noted that Romo’s incident is an “evolving situation [that] we are still assessing.”
Romo is scheduled for a court appearance on Sept. 21.
During the entirety of Romo’s time in the NFL, he was the quarterback for the Cowboys from 2004 to 2016 and made four Pro Bowl appearances.
