Timberwolves set unwanted record in Game 2 thrashing vs. Spurs
The Minnesota Timberwolves suffered a historic setback Wednesday night, falling 133-95 to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 of their Western Conference semifinal series, a defeat that marked the largest postseason loss in franchise history.
The 38-point margin surpassed Minnesota’s previous worst playoff defeat, a 30-point loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on April 29, 2003. The result also evened the series at 1-1 after the Timberwolves had taken Game 1 104-102.
San Antonio quickly erased any momentum Minnesota carried into the matchup, scoring the first 11 points through Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. Wembanyama finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds, while Fox produced 16 points, with the duo combining for a far more efficient outing after struggling in Game 1.
The Spurs shot 50% from the field and 41% from three-point range, building a 29-point first-half lead. The Wolves, meanwhile, was limited to 35 first-half points, shooting 29.8% from the floor and 2-of-15 from three-point range before halftime. They also committed 11 turnovers in the opening half, contributing to a 24-point deficit at the break.
San Antonio broke the game open early, stretching their advantage to 59-34 on an 11-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back dunks from Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle, who led all scorers with 21 points. Carter Bryant also contributed with a two-handed dunk in his first points of the series.
Minnesota had five double-figure scorers but no player finished with more than 12 points. Anthony Edwards, Julius Randle, Jaden McDaniels, and Terrence Shannon Jr. each finished with 12 points, while Edwards also committed four turnovers and was on the floor for a team-worst minus-33 in his 24 minutes.
The Timberwolves ended the game with 22 turnovers and fewer than 40% shooting from the field. The deficit reached 38 points before both teams cleared their benches with around 10 minutes remaining.
The series now shifts to Minneapolis, where Games 3 and 4 are scheduled for Friday and Sunday, with Minnesota holding a 3-0 home record in the postseason entering Game 3.
