Timberwolves rumors: 1 offseason ‘priority’ that doesn’t involve Giannis Antetokounmpo trade

The Minnesota Timberwolves are facing a crucial summer following a disappointing 30-point defeat to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 6 of the second round of the playoffs. With Julius Randle struggling during the postseason and Anthony Edwards entering his prime, the franchise seems to be just one elite player away from contending for a title. Many analysts are suggesting that the team needs to aggressively pursue Giannis Antetokounmpo, proposing a trade package centered around Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and several draft picks.

With the Milwaukee Bucks undergoing a transitional phase, the opportunity to pair the “Greek Freak” with Edwards could lead to the creation of the NBA’s next great dynasty.

However, beyond the blockbuster trade rumors, the New York Times emphasizes a more immediate concern for the Timberwolves: re-signing Ayo Dosunmu.

Retaining Dosunmu has become a priority for the front office, especially after the team invested heavily to bring him to Minnesota.

They traded Rob Dillingham, Leonard Miller, and four second-round picks to the Chicago Bulls to acquire him.

As an unrestricted free agent on July 1, Dosunmu is viewed as a “perfect fit” because of his scoring ability and perimeter defense, making his retention essential, particularly if DiVincenzo is traded in pursuit of a star player.

The excitement surrounding these moves grew during the NBA Draft Lottery in Chicago.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, front office personnel are closely monitoring both Giannis and the Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard.

While the Bucks are reportedly open to offers for Antetokounmpo, an Eastern Conference executive informed Windhorst that some teams might actually value Leonard more due to his recent health and efficiency.

Despite the ongoing discussions about Kawhi, the Timberwolves’ primary focus remains on acquiring Giannis.

As Tim Bontemps pointed out, the league anticipates “fresh conversations” regarding these superstars as the summer unfolds, but for the Wolves, finding a balance between pursuing Giannis and prioritizing the retention of Dosunmu will be the ultimate challenge for the front office.
