Tigers get pitcher back from IL before Blue Jays game

As the Detroit Tigers continue their three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, their starting pitching rotation, which has been decimated by injury so far this season, is about to get a big boost.

Casey Mize, who suffered an adductor strain, has been activated from the 15-day Injured List, according to the official Tigers’ social media account.

“The Tigers today activated RHP Casey Mize off the 15-day injured list,” the Tigers PR team wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “RHP Brenan Hanifee has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo.”

Mize has been unavailable for the Tigers since late May, when he left his start against the Atlanta Braves. The good news for the Tigers is that he didn’t require a rehabilitation start, and according to skipper A.J. Hinch, he’s “responded well” to his multiple bullpen throwing sessions.

“Casey responded well to the multiple bullpens and the live BP that he did down in Lakeland,” Hinch said, via MLB.com. “The fact that it’s only been the minimum [15-day IL stint] plus a day, which is really a scheduling thing not a health thing, it gives us comfort knowing that he can go out and give us generally what you’d feel like he would give us [normally], maybe dial back a little bit of the pitch count because the intensity is going to increase.”

So far this season, Mize, whom the Tigers selected with the first overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, has a 2-2 record (six starts) with a 2.90 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. He’s also thrown 35 strikeouts over 31 innings of work on the mound.
