Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander breaks Michael Jordan’s record with MVP win
Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander joined an exclusive club featuring Michael Jordan following his second consecutive MVP win on Sunday evening.
Gilgeous-Alexander completed the eighth regular season of his NBA career, his seventh with the Thunder. He made his way up the ranks to becoming one of the best players in the entire league, edging out Nikola Jokic to win his first MVP award in the 2024-25 campaign.
The star guard was on a mission to reclaim his MVP throne while helping the Thunder on their title repeat objective. He completed one of those goals by winning MVP on Sunday for the second consecutive year, joining Jordan with how effective he was on the offensive side of the ball.
“2025-26 Kia NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander posted the highest FG% ever by a guard averaging 30+ PPG in a season, shooting 55.3% while averaging 31.4 PPG. The previous best mark belonged to Michael Jordan in 1990-91 (53.9 FG%, 31.5 PPG),” NBA PR’s post read.

What’s next for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Thunder
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander rightfully deserved his place on the MVP throne, beating out Nikola Jokic once again for the award.
Gilgeous-Alexander was remarkable throughout the 2025-26 campaign, taking part in 68 games. He averaged 31.1 points, 6.6 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game. He boasted shooting splits of 55.3% from the field, including 38.6% from beyond the arc, and 87.9% from the free-throw line.
In the playoffs, he is producing 29.1 points, 7.1 assists and three rebounds per game throughout Oklahoma City’s eight games. The Thunder have made easy work of their opponents so far, sweeping the Phoenix Suns in the first round and the Los Angeles Lakers in the semifinals. They are one series win away from returning to the NBA Finals for the second straight year, something the Golden State Warriors last pulled off during the mid-to-late 2010s.
The Thunder will look forward to their journey in the West Finals, enjoying a great matchup against the San Antonio Spurs. Game 1 of that series will take place on May 18 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
