Mackenzie Dern outclasses Gillian Robertson to defend title at UFC 330

Mackenzie Dern put on a real champion’s performance to defend her title at UFC 330 on Saturday.

Dern put her women’s strawweight belt on the line for the first time in the co-main event of UFC 330, having claimed her throne last October with a unanimous decision win over Virna Jandiroba.

The event at Philadelphia’s Xfinity Mobile Arena was headlined by a UFC welterweight title bout between Islam Makhachev and Ian Machado Garry.

Dern dominates at UFC 330

From the opening exchanges right through the final bell, Dern dominated Robertson, showing levels in all departments.

The champion beat up Robertson’s lead leg, outboxed her opponent on the feet and won almost every exchange on the canvas.

Robertson had her best spell in the fifth and final round, but it was far too little too late as Dern cruised to a comfortable unanimous decision.

After five rounds, two judges scored the fight 49-46 while a third ruled it 48-47, handing Dern the victory.

“I’m super happy,” the 33-year-old from Brazil told Joe Rogan after the co-main event.

“I’ve been working my wrestling so I can be well-rounded. I wanted to get the submission, but she’s very good at jiu-jitsu, so it was hard.

“I try to get submissions in all my fights. Anyone who is fighting for the belt has decent enough defence.

“I wish I could’ve dealt more damage to get the submission.”

Dern vs Robertson – what happened?

It was a fight expected to be spent largely on the ground, given Robertson, who holds the record for the most submission wins among female fighters in UFC history, was taking on a two-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion in Dern.

Dern let her hands go early before Robertson shot for an instant takedown, which the champion quickly reversed.

Robertson went again, but Dern stuffed it again and looked very sharp on her feet, landing straights and hooks while beating up the challenger’s lead leg.

Dern then secured her first takedown and found herself on top in a comfortable position, almost securing a choke before the bell sounded.

Coach Din Thomas told Robertson to ‘wake the f*** up’ in the corner before the two female stars emerged for round two.

However, Dern asserted her dominance in the second five minutes, controlling Robertson on the canvas for most of the round and it was all one-way traffic.

Dern showed she was also the better fighter on the feet as time ticked on, with Robertson, contesting her first five-round UFC fight, struggling to land any meaningful damage on the champion.

And it was much the same in round four, as Dern locked in a body triangle in back control to prevent Robertson from providing any form of attack with just five minutes remaining.

Robertson did, however, show her best version in round five, but Dern, who knew she was well up on the scorecards, rode it out to get the nod on the scorecards.

Also at UFC 330, Edson Barboza announced his retirement from MMA after a second-round stoppage defeat against Esteban Ribovics.

And Jalin Turner scored a 39-second KO in his second bout since reversing his decision to retire from the sport.
