The ‘unique gift’ Nikolaj Ehlers uses to drive Hurricanes’ undefeated postseason

The Carolina Hurricanes are one win away from the Eastern Conference Finals. It would be their second appearance in the East Final in as many years. And if they win Game 4 over the Philadelphia Flyers, they would get to the East Final with an 8-0 postseason record in 2026. One player quietly driving the team forward is veteran player Nikolaj Ehlers.

Ehlers has not played in every game for the Hurricanes. But he has been productive when he has been on the ice. He has two goals and four points in six postseason games. And he has made a massive impact on his team’s offense, as noted recently by head coach Rod Brind’Amour.

“When he gets the puck, there’s a little different flair,” Brind’Amour said Friday, via NHL.com. “He can kind of make something out of nothing, and that’s a unique gift that not many players have in this league. And he certainly has that.”

Ehlers is in the midst of his first postseason with the Hurricanes. He signed a six-year contract in NHL Free Agency last summer after spending the first 10 seasons of his career with the Winnipeg Jets.

However, this is not his first taste of playoff hockey. Far from it, in fact. The Danish forward skated in 45 career playoff games prior to joining the Hurricanes. This includes a trip to the 2018 Western Conference Finals with the Jets. He has nine goals and 21 points in his postseason career with Winnipeg.

The 30-year-old never won the Stanley Cup with the Jets. He and the Hurricanes are seeking to break a longstanding Cup drought in 2026. Ehlers is playing some of his best hockey, and it could result in a trip back to the East Final for Carolina if they can win Game 4 on
