The history behind J.T. Poston’s Memorial win

J.T. Poston won the Memorial Tournament over the weekend, although it took over 72 holes to get it done.

Poston out-dueled Ryan Gerard in the playoff, the 11th ever in the history of the Memorial Tournament. On the subject of history there was quite a bit made by Poston en route to victory, including one bit that is quite surprising.

• Poston became the third player to birdie the 18th at the Memorial to force a playoff. The other two were Hideki Matsuyama and David Edwards. Interestingly all three won!
• J.T. is the first player to ever win the Memorial when losing strokes off of the tee as he finished 43rd in the field in this capacity. The other players across the PGA Tour at large to win this way this season are Akshay Bhatia (Arnold Palmer Invitational) and Brandt Snedeker (ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic). Amazingly, Ryan Gerard led the field in Strokes Gained Putting.
• This was the lowest rank the Memorial winner held entering the tournament, Poston was 94 in the OWGR, since William McGirt in 2016 who was 102nd.

Unfortunately for Ryan Gerard on the other hand… he is getting quite used to these Maid of Honor duties. Gerard now has three runner-up finishes this season as he finished second at the Sony Open and T2 at the American Express.
