The hidden truth behind Christian Watson’s $110.5 million contract extension with Packers

The Green Bay Packers grabbed attention after signing Christian Watson to a four-year contract extension worth $110.5 million. Many felt that the team overpaid for Watson, even though he has shown immense promise.

Watson’s connection with Jordan Love was probably a major factor in the Packers’ decision to give the 27-year-old wide receiver a lucrative offer. His tandem with Love should only improve as they progress together in Green Bay.

Watson missed the first half of last season as he was recovering from an ACL injury. In 10 games, he logged 35 receptions for 611 yards and six touchdowns.

Those numbers were enough to convince the Packers that Watson is a key cog in the squad’s vision. But while many were surprised by the hefty deal, The 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov clarified that the base amount is only $92 million.

“The deal has over $18 million in available incentives,” noted Meirov.

Watson was hampered by various injuries in recent years, but all signs point to him being 100% healthy for the first time. He has yet to play a full season.

He was drafted by Green Bay as the No. 34 pick in 2022.

Last season, the former North Dakota State star finished in the top 20 in average points among all wide receivers, further showcasing that he can be a dependable target when he can consistently stay on the field.

With Romeo Doubs joining the New England Patriots and the trade of Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles, Watson will carry a heavier role for Green Bay. Do not be surprised if he makes the leap and gets his first nod to the Pro Bowl.

After all, he has more than 110 million reasons to be motivated.
