Texas basketball wins recruiting battle for former St. Mary’s star
Texas and Sean Miller continue to quietly dominate the 2026 college basketball transfer portal. The Longhorns added to an already impressive class with one of the biggest late commitments of the year in ex-Saint Mary’s guard Mikey Lewis.
Lewis was one of many Gaels to enter the portal after head coach Randy Bennett left for Arizona State. He kept his recruitment open throughout the process before confirming his commitment to Texas on Thursday, On3 Sports’ Joe Tipton reported.
The rising junior committed to Texas over Villanova, Washington and Oregon, among others.
Lewis was one of the most improved players in the WCC last season, increasing his scoring from 8.2 points per game in 2024-2025 to 13.9 points per game in 2025-2026. He ended the year 11th in the conference with 2.1 three-pointers made per game.
Although his scoring was streaky, Lewis tended to show up when Saint Mary’s needed him most. He was the Gaels’ lone consistent scorer in a loss to No. 24 Vanderbilt early in the year and had his best performance of the season with a 31-point bomb against Gonzaga in the regular season finale.
Lewis now joins former TCU star David Punch, former Auburn guard Elyjah Freeman, former Tennessee guard Amari Evans and ex-Colorado guard Isaiah Johnson in Texas’ loaded incoming college basketball transfer portal class. All four were considered among the best players the portal had to offer.
After making a surprise run to the Sweet Sixteen in Miller’s inaugural season, Texas is poised to compete for an SEC title in 2026-2027. Miller has done everything right in the last two months after a disappointing regular season showing.
