Team’s relocation from Arlington to Dallas accidentally leaked by coach as $3.7bn project hits delay

American Airlines Center is set to host the Dallas Wings in 2027.

Coach Jose Fernandez accidentally revealed the move in a call with reporters Tuesday.

CEO Greg Bibb has confirmed that talks are being held, but insisted that no deal has been signed.

“We do not have a finalized agreement, nor have we achieved the approvals from the league that you technically need to have to change venue for a season,” he said.

“So while I’m optimistic that we’re going to have news on that front soon, we do not have that news as of today.”

The Wings use College Park Center on the University of Texas at Arlington campus for practice and games.

A new practice facility and arena in downtown Dallas has been hit with construction delays, which could see American Airlines Center step up as a temporary solution.

Memorial Auditorium is currently being renovated as part of a $3.7 billion revamp for the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

The Wings will remain at the 7,000-seater College Park Center for much of 2026 with the home opener against the Atlanta Dream set for May 12.

Three games will be played at AAC, however, making use of the ability to bring in around three times as many fans.

Wings ready for take off

The Wings now boast two of the brightest starts in the WNBA.

Paige Bueckers arrived in the 2025 draft and was a near unanimous Rookie of the Year winner with 70 of 72 votes.

Her form was not enough to life the team, however, and a 10-34 record led to the No. 1 overall pick for the second year running.

Azzi Fudd heard her name called and will join her former UConn teammate and girlfriend in the W.

With the Mavericks struggling even with Cooper Flagg on board, the best chance of winning basketball in Dallas may be with the new dynamic duo.

After their relationship drew most of the headlines post-draft, the Wings were desperate to keep matters on the court.

They will get the chance to let their skills do the talking this month.

Fudd has already called out the refs after a preseason clash with the Las Vegas Aces.

“Honestly, I feel more confused. I thought you could be physical in the W, and anytime you touch someone, it’s a foul,” she said. “I don’t know. I’m still figuring that out.”

Her teammates joked that she is about to get her welcome to the W moment with a fine.

“Yeah you’re still figuring that out,” Jessica Shepard said. “‘Cause you may get hit with a fine.”

Thankfully, Fudd is the best-paid WNBA rookie ever with a $500,000 contract after the new CBA kicked in.

This is a 534 percent increase on Bueckers, who earned $78,831 in Year 1.
