Team announcer breaks silence after getting job back following alleged affair with player’s sister

Jacob Tobey has reportedly returned to his job with the San Antonio Spurs.

In July, the Spurs TV play-by-play announcer had reportedly been fired amid an alleged affair with the sister of a San Antonio player.

Front Office Sports were the first to break the news, reporting that Tobey was accused on social media of cheating on his girlfriend with the sister of a player.

The allegation came after an Instagram story on Tobey’s account posted: “This is my girlfriend of six years. But I cheated on her with Loren Waters. @lorenkwatrs So feel free to continue following me if you really think I’m a good guy because I’m not. :)”

According to Awful Announcing, the Instagram story was followed by a photo strip that appeared to show Tobey and Loren Waters, the sister of Spurs player Lindy Waters III, together kissing.

As a result of the social media posts, Front Office Sports reported Tobey was out as the Spurs’ lead play-by-play announcer.

However, in a stunning reversal, Tobey is back with the NBA franchise.

Front Office Sports said Friday that multiple sources had told them the announcer was gone, but “his exit has been undone, and he is returning to the team.”

A source confirmed to them that Tobey has indeed gotten his job back with the team, although the Spurs declined to comment.

Not long after, Tobey took to X to share a statement, thanking the Spurs while acknowledging he needs to ‘regain trust’.

“I thank the Spurs for allowing me time to step away to sort out issues in my personal life,” Tobey wrote.

“I understand that I will have to regain trust within the organization and across our community, a community where I will continue to be present with enthusiasm and passion. I believe I have the best job in the world and am thrilled to be able to continue as the team’s play-by-play announcer.”

Prior to joining the Spurs’ booth, Tobey worked at 9NEWS in Denver and has called play-by-play for outlets including Fox Sports and the Pac-12 Network.

Tobey is expected to reunite with Sean Elliott and the rest of the Spurs broadcasting team on DAZN, which was recently announced as the new provider of all San Antonio games not exclusive to national TV.
