Saturday football tips
Bet of the Day – Newcastle to beat Aston Villa @ 19/10
Just as you think Aston Villa’s good fortune was coming to an end, up pops Jack Hinshelwood’s 86th-minute own goal, to give Villa a 1-0 victory over Brighton in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
Unai Emery’s men produced only one shot on target, failed to create a chance of note, and posted an expected goals number of just 0.72 against the Seagulls.
However, much like the bulk of the campaign, Villa managed to secure a victory, and it’s now 11 of their last 13 successes, which have come by a single-goal margin.
Emery’s side hosts Newcastle in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday, and with Champions League qualification the Spaniards’ top priority, it may well be a rotated Villa side this weekend.
The Villans first-choice starting line-up has been pushing its luck and a changed roster may well be vulnerable to Newcastle.
The Magpies snapped a five-game winless run when beating Tottenham 2-1 on Tuesday night and the Toon Army were good enough to pick up a 1-1 draw in Paris against Paris Saint-Germain last month.
In fact, Newcastle were the better side on that occasion, and with Eddie Howe having a deeper squad to choose from, the Magpies are fancied to progress to round five.
Special of the Day – Norwich to win, Norwich over 1.5 goals & West Brom under 0.5 goals bet builder @ 23/4
Norwich have won five of their last six Championship games to surge up the table and the Canaries can fly high when second-tier strugglers West Brom come to Carrow Road.
The Norfolk side were excellent when crushing Oxford 3-0 at the Kassam Stadium in midweek and it was only last month that Norwich bashed the Baggies 5-0 at the Hawthorns.
The Canaries can give the FA Cup plenty of respect, with relegation fears eased, but the same can’t be said for West Brom.
The Throstles have failed to win any of their last eight Championship matches, and they have scored just one in their last five, and moving out of the drop zone is likely to be the key consideration for the Baggies.
Take a Norwich victory, West Brom to score under 0.5 goals and the Canaries to score over 1.5 goals in a 23/4 bet builder.
Longshot of the Day – Bolton, Luton & Gillingham treble @ 35/1
Play a big-price treble away from the FA Cup on Saturday. Lincoln and Bolton are deep in the League One promotion battle and the Whites look overpriced to win at the LNER Stadium. Steven Schumacher’s men are churning out the best numbers in the third tier this term, and the Trotters have taken 16 points from their last six League One games.
Bolton and Lincoln will hope Luton can do them a favour at Cardiff on Saturday and they may just get their wish. The Bluebirds sit at the top of the League One table, but there isn’t anywhere near as much between the Welsh side and the Hatters as the points tally may suggest and that has Luton at too big a price this weekend.
Gillingham have lost only four of their last 14 League Two matches and the Gills are a little unlucky not to be further up the table. The Medway men host Crewe, who have regressed to win only five of their last 17 games, and Gillingham should get a deserved three points at Gresty Road.
