Stephon Castle already ‘guarding’ SGA before pivotal Game 5

The San Antonio Spurs are unquestionably entering the most critical game of their postseason run on Tuesday. With the Western Conference Finals tied at two, the Spurs have the chance to take control back from the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

While most eyes will focus on Victor Wembanyama’s sustained success, there is no denying the impact of Stephon Castle, especially when it comes to guarding Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Before the game, SGA made a grand entrance into the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. He walks with a strident swagger as if he anticipates a win on the home floor. Naturally, Spurs fans reacted with a feeling that Castle is already “guarding” SGA before tip-off.

Another user echoed that same sentiment.

“Castle locked in. Already guarding SGA on the dugout,” @LeagueInsiderr posted on X, formerly Twitter. 

That theme permeated much of social media.

SGA is coming off winning his second straight NBA MVP Award. Nevertheless, he has had to go up against the tenacious defense of Castle. Altogether, Castle has drastically limited SGA’s overall offensive productivity and efficiency during the series.

Castle has beaten SGA to his sweet spots at times, forcing him into late-shot situations. Also, he has forced SGA to change his shot selection and give the ball up more times than usual.

The series will head back to the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio for Game 6 on Thursday.
