Steelers coach reveals dark horse contender for best in NFL status

The Pittsburgh Steelers have always been known for their stout defense. In fact, some of the best players in Steelers franchise history were on Pittsburgh’s iconic Steel Curtain defense. One Steelers coach believes that the team has one defensive player who could soon be one of the best in the NFL.

Steelers defensive line coach Domata Peko hyped up former fifth-round pick Yahya Black during a recent interview. He declared that Black could become the NFL’s best nose tackle if he continues working hard.

“I feel like Black can be one of the best [nose tackles] in the game if he just keeps on doing what he’s been doing, and that’s working his butt off,” Peko said at OTAs on Wednesday per Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Really good on his technique and his details. I just want to sharpen him up and get him really going and try to bring out the best in him.”

Black played behind 2023 second-round pick Keeanu Benton at nose tackle in 2025. Black played fairly well when called upon, logging 28 total tackles with two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery during his rookie season.

The 2026 season could be an incredibly important year for both players. Benton is in the final year of his rookie contract, which means his future in Pittsburgh hinges on earning a second contract.

However, Peko’s recent comments suggest that Black has a chance to unseat Benton at some point during the season.

Ultimately, Pittsburgh is in a good position now that they have two nose tackles who they trust. But it will be interesting to see if Black can compete for a starting job in the near future.

Steelers fans should keep an eye on both players throughout the rest of the team’s offseason program.
